Carvoeiro · Car, stairs
The Algarve's postcard cove — turquoise water between two golden headlands, best known for its cliff-top panoramas and sea caves.
Fringed by towering twin-sided cliffs, Marinha is repeatedly ranked among the most beautiful beaches in Europe. Calm turquoise shallows give way to grottos best explored by kayak or stand-up paddleboard.
May–June & September
Warm days and calmer water, with fewer boats and buses than high summer.
Any month for the viewpoint
The clifftop panorama needs no swimming weather.
08:00–11:00
Quietest stretch of the day — flat morning light and empty sand.
After 17:00
Tour boats thin out and the light turns golden.
Crowd level
Very high on July–August afternoons; comfortable on early mornings and off-season weekdays.
Know before you go
Early morning for calm, clear water inside the cove; late afternoon when the cliffs glow amber. The classic twin-cliff shot is from the boardwalk on the western headland.
Informal cliff-top car park at the end of the access road; it fills early in summer and cars line the lane.
A long staircase connects the car park to the sand — not step-free. The clifftop viewpoints and boardwalk are reachable without stairs.
Calm shallows suit confident swimmers in summer, but the staircase and deep water off the rocks make it less ideal for toddlers.
The sun drops behind the western headland — stay for the last half-hour of light if you can.
Timing notes are editorial guidance based on each beach's orientation and seasonality — not guarantees.
