Between late July and mid-August, inland temperatures push past 35°C while the sea stays refreshingly cool. Locals do not fight the heat; they schedule around it. Copy the rhythm and even a heatwave week becomes one of your best.
Flip the beach hours
Beach from nine until noon, then again after five. The noon window is for lunch, naps or air-conditioned errands. Umbrella discipline matters more than sunscreen brand — the Atlantic sun is deceptively strong with the breeze.
Water without waves
The south coast is famously swimmable, but cave and grotto trips show you the coastline at its most dramatic while keeping you on the water all morning. Kayak tours of the Benagil area launch early specifically to beat both crowds and heat.
Shade culture
Every town has a shaded core: Lagos'Rua Silva Lopes arcades, Tavira's garden bandstand, Olhão's market halls. Two-hour museum and church visits double as cooling breaks. This is also the season for long lunches — menus do not rush you.
Evenings are the reward
From eight o'clock the towns change gear. This is when you book dinner, stroll the promenades and let the children loose on the praças. If your accommodation has air conditioning, keep it for sleeping, not for hiding.
