Dogs lead good lives in the Algarve — café terraces default to dog-friendly, and the long shoulder seasons turn whole beaches into morning walks. Summer, however, has rules worth knowing before you travel.
The summer rulebook
During the bathing season, most patrolled beaches restrict dogs to designated areas. Each municipality signs its own 'praia para cães' — check the local câmara website for the current list near your base, as designations shift year to year.
Off-season freedom
From October to May the coast relaxes dramatically: cliff-top paths, fishing quays and empty strands become shared territory. It is the best dog-owning version of the Algarve — just keep leads handy where cliffs drop.

Heat etiquette
