The Algarve predates the motorway by centuries, and its classic towns grew around stations and quays. This five-day loop uses nothing but rail, boats and walking — with every connection tested by thousands of summer travellers.
Days 1–2 — Lagos on foot
Arrive by train into the western terminus. The old town, marina and Dona Ana all fall within walking radius; Ponta da Piedade connects by footpath or seasonal road train. Book the grotto cruise from the marina gate.
Days 3–4 — Rail east to Tavira
Board the morning regional train (change at Faro for timing ease). Tavira hands you its island by footbridge or ferry and its lagoon by kayak-rental quay — no parking anxiety exists here to begin with.
Day 5 — Faro finale
A short rail hop ends in Faro: old-town lanes, the marina market, and a Ria Formosa boat trip departing practically from the city centre. Airport buses complete the circle home.
Making it easier
Buy train tickets at station machines or online the day before in peak season; keep coins for ferries and lockers; and pack lighter than feels wise — cobbles tax wheeled luggage heavily.
