The Best Time to Visit the Algarve

There is no bad time to visit the Algarve — only different Algarves. With over 300 days of sunshine a year, the real question is not whether the sun will shine, but what kind of coast you want around you when it does.

Spring (March–May)

The hills turn green, almond and orange blossom perfumes the air, and daytime temperatures settle between 18–24°C. It is the finest season for hiking the Seven Hanging Valleys or cycling the Ecovia without the summer heat. Sea water is still brisk, but the beaches are all yours.

Summer (June–August)

Peak season brings guaranteed sunshine, warm seas and every beach bar in full swing. Book stays and restaurants well ahead, expect lively crowds in Lagos and Albufeira, and lean into it: sunset sailing, late dinners and long beach days are exactly what this season is for.

Autumn (September–October)

Locals will tell you September is the secret best month: sea temperatures peak around 22°C, crowds thin after the first week, and harvest season fills tavern glasses with new wine. October can still deliver perfect beach days.

Winter (November–February)

Mild days around 15–17°C make winter ideal for golfers, birdwatchers in the Ria Formosa and anyone chasing quiet cliff walks. It is also when you will share Praia da Marinha with photographers rather than towel-to-towel crowds.
