1. Hiring a car for a single-base holiday
If you are staying in Lagos, Tavira or Albufeira old towns, parking eats time and the centre is walkable. Rent for the excursion days only — or skip it entirely and use trains plus boats.
2. Underestimating August booking lead times
Seafront tables, cave trips and family resorts sell out weeks ahead in peak season. The reverse mistake: pre-booking everything for a May or October trip, when spontaneity is half the pleasure.
3. Treating the west coast as a half-day add-on
Sagres and the Vicentine coast are a different ocean with cooler water and bigger light. Give them a full day, check the wind forecast, and bring a layer even in August.

Locals choose beaches by the afternoon wind. Nortada days favour sheltered south-facing coves; when the east wind blows, the west coast shines. Ask your host each morning — it is the single best daily decision hack.
5. Paying for airport taxis on arrival day
Pre-booked transfers cost a fraction of the rank queue for families, and the airport bus covers Faro city cheaply. Sort the arrival leg before you land.
6. Flying into the wrong hour
Midday arrivals burn a beach day. Early flights give you a full first afternoon by the water; evening departures buy one last swim. When comparing fares, weigh the hour, not just the price.
7. Skipping the east entirely
Most first-timers never cross past Faro, missing the Ria Formosa islands and Tavira's river evenings. Even one eastern day rebalances a coast-heavy itinerary — and delayed flights there are exactly where compensation checks become relevant knowledge.
